My 2nd PPM Finals - ENGLISH Debate. 2014 v. 1987.

( 1st Speaker from the Opposition TKC )

1987 was the FIRST time I'd attended the PPM Finals in Pusat Islam KL. Today...or rather Yesterday, I attended the 2014 Finals held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

How things have changed.

The most significant change observed is that the format now is totally different.

Other details - Some comparison:

1987 - Delayed telecast on RTM

(4) PRIZES

1987 - Mixed. English programmes, Journalists and Government.
Note:
Received the following comments from an ex-ASEAN Secretariat Senior personnel and currently the Deputy at one of the Schools or Institute in a Public University.
Salam Amirul,
Well, it all depends on whether the debate was just for academic purpose or for reality. And, I don't think even the judges really knew and understood about ASEAN. I have met with senior profs on international and strategic studies who think that ASEAN is modelled after EU, which is not correct. I know for certain that many people think that anything to do with Southeast Asian countries is to do with ASEAN, and anything to do with a country's or a national problem or issue is an ASEAN problem, which a wrong perception.
ASEAN is just an association where its cooperation activities are confined only to specific political-security, economic and socio-cultural sectors.
Best rgds. Wslm

(6) SPONSORS
2014 - Bank Rakyat as Corporate sponsors.
1987 - NO Corporate Sector involvement

(7) REHEARSALS

The National level Finals of the PPM begins Today in Kuala Terengganu.

Representatives from the respective zones have been chosen earlier in the zonals.
Competition for the Southern Zone was held in Melaka (Read March BlogPOST ).

As a comparison, in the 1980s there were NO zonals Competition with less than 40 residential schools/colleges in Malaysia.

Prime Minister's Trophy (Piala Perdana Menteri) - Debate Competition, National Finals.

Am relieved, Eldest will be going after all to the Finals of the National Level Debate Competition otherwise known as the Prime Minister's Trophy or Piala Perdana Menteri in Malay. The competition will be held in Kuala Terengganu end of this month.

The Debate teacher called yesterday to inform that the "technicalities" which had earlier prevented eldest's participation have been resolved. Was also asked to book a return flight for eldest which will be subsidised by the PTA. Apparently, flight arrangements have already been made for the rest of the team.

Kids nowadays are so lucky. During the 80s, my team travelled to PPM competitions in the "infamous" 3-ton trucks and stayed at lest  than kosher barracks facilities. Despite the perceived handicap we still won the English Debate and Basketball events in 1987 whilst the Malay Debate team made it to the Quarter Finals - Beat that Eldest....... You and Your College have 2 attempts / years to try.

PIALA PERDANA MENTERI - South Zone Finals @MOZAC, Melaka

UPDATE 2

UPDATE 1 @04/03:
In a team reshuffle, Eldest will now be the 3rd Speaker. Iman will be 1st Speaker whilst Marina will be 2nd Speaker. PPM will start on Thursday.
Yet to get my lodgings. Can't wait to go to Anjung Batu for the Ikan Bakar+++ Sorry Doc!
>>>>>>>
Received a call from Eldest.

Finally, after lots of hardwork and breaking twice consecutively at 9th Swinburne in Kuching-SSIDC(Asian Style) & LKW IDC in Cyberjaya(British Parliamentarian Style) eldest was selected to represent the College in the Piala Perdana Menteri (PPM) - South Zone Finals. Tentatively, event will be held from Wednesday/Thursday to Sunday next week. Opportunity to Balik Kampung despite being in the midst of Season 4 TTP Shoot.

It seems nowadays, due to the number of residential schools - the PPM is divided into zones and only the best teams goes to the Finals proper.  In the 80s, there were no such zoning and I started going to the PPM for the first time in 1984 at SMSS...TKC, NS (1985)...SMS Kelantan (1986) and SMTSP, Perlis (1987).

After the chess debacle of not being in the college team despite being one of only 2 students from the college representing Seremban at the State Finals held in Rembau last year am hopeful her team qualifies as one of the Southern Zone representative for the National-level Prime Minister's Trophy(PPM). As a comparison, she's a year behind in representing the College team compared to me...as such the Kampung Player still got some bragging rights, WaQAQA!
