Whilst horsing around with the kids decided to insert a geography lesson by having them look at the globe and counting the number of countries of which they have played against chess players as well as the countries they'd visited.

SBP F1 2015 Results Out.

The results for those selected to enter Form 1 at the Ministry of Education's residential schools/colleges otherwise known as SBP is out.

Alhamdullilah, the effort put in and sacrifices made (read 3 December 2014 blogPOST) were not in vain as hAnA received an offer to her preferred place.

RESULTS

The 2nd Piala YDP MPSJ held at the 3C Complex in Subang Jaya on Saturday will forever be known as "The Elevator Games" as 22 people were stuck in the lift prior to the start of the afternoon rounds. The 22 which consists of 11 adults and 11 children were stuck for around 30 minutes.

What many would not have noticed is that the organiser which normally uses their own ratings based on the harkness system(pre-ELO ratings) decided to use the FIDE rating instead of the NR to seed the players.

After being out of competitions for around 5 weeks (the last being the Term Break U14 Tournament, read blogPOST) , CP finished in his own often quoted words - "Nothing but Useless" 4th after 5 wins, a draw and a loss in 7 rounds of rapid play of 20 minutes each player. His prize was a nice plaque and RM80.

Selection to attend Form 1 Residential Schools are so competitive nowadays. During my time I "just" had to pass medical, physical and IQ tests. Those who passed the 3 tests will then be interviewed by the selectors. Nowadays, apart from the tests applicants are also asked to converse and give a public speech in malay and english, read jawi and recite the Quran and also perform something individually and as a group during talent time.

The kids missed many important events like the National Rapid & Blitz, 1st Johor Open and 6th Penang Open due to hAnA being shorlisted to attend F1 Interviews and/or Selection programmes held by the respective colleges in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.

Came across an event organised by Stonemaster and registered for it. Stonemaster programmes are usually well attended and offer numerous prizes. Hopefully it do not clash with any F1 selection programmes being conducted as  MRSM selection will commence next week if I'm not mistaken.

In Bandar Enstek - N9 for a Selection Programme. As mentioned earlier, we missed the Johor Open due to matters related to hAnA's Form 1 2015 application. Dropped her at 8AM and picked her up around 5.30PM. Also spoke to a KL player i.e. Nazirah who was called for the selection as well.

Among the Assessment done are psychomotor test, English, BM, Quran Reading and Performing Arts.

Hopefully, she'll Be one of those selected.

NO SHOW at 1st Johor Open 2014

Despite being the first few to sign up for the event in April, paid the entrance fees and booked the hotel room we unfortunately have to give the event a miss.
Reason being hAnA is applying for a place in a few residential schools for Form 1 next year and there are application forms to be submitted, selection programmes to attend in addition to the odd interview etc. etc.

MISSING NATIONAL Rapid & Blitz for RBS@Melaka!

The National Rapid competition was supposed to be hAnA's swansong for the U-12 age group. However, due to her being called by KYS (refer 11 October 2014 blogPOST ) to attend a Residence-based Selection or RBS which is supposed to whittle down the applicants from 250 to the final 100 from 22 till 25 November, we have to give the event a miss.

Could have still made arrangements for CP to compete but when asked as to whether he wants to compete or not he said - "..it'll spoil my classical game la ayah!". Hah! I thought since when has he ever been bothered? Perhaps he's become conscious after being asked not to play in the U8 category in the recent Term Break tournament (read 17 November 2014 blogPOST ). Additionally, a KL teacher also ask that CP plays more games  against 1400-1600NR opponents.

All the best to those taking part in the Nationals at UTP Tronoh starting tomorrow.

Its prize-giving day today or officially called "Majlis Anugerah Cemerlang" for academic purposes and both hAnA and CP received an invitation earlier in the week on a green-coloured letter to attend the ceremony which is supposed to begin at 8AM.

After yesterday's Majlis Anugerah Kokurikulum,, its the second day running that hAnA gets to go on stage. hAnA gets her "regular" academic prizes which we have come to expect. It is also CP's second day running to go on stage after yesterday when the school finally "re-awarded" his 10th Asian School's Runners-Up Trophy (read August 2014 blogPOST). Based on the invitation received, CP will be given the "Anugerah Holistik". What the anugerah is for I've no idea but perhaps its something academic related.

In a competition organised for standard 6 students only, hAnA took the top spot over the twins Nafiz and Nazif. Further down were her team mates who represented Bangsar Zone in the MSSWPKL finals earlier this year.

Term Break Chess Tournament - THiRD,U14

Over the weekend CP was supposed to to perform in his first simul in PJ with 20-30 students but the event was cancelled. Thanks to Ms.Louisa managed to register him at the last minute for the Term Break tournament the good thing of which it starts at 11am. However, to improve his game he cannot play in the U8 event.

In an event he rarely participates in i.e. U-14, CP emerged third with 4 points(3 wins & 2 draws) from 5 rounds. The 2 persons he drew with finished 1st(4.5 pts) and 2nd(4 pts).

Part 3 - 1st among EQUALS...80m CHAMPION!

The final day of the postponed(postponed due to the haze earlier in the year) SKTTDI(1) Sports Day took place under the hot blistering sun. Spectators were either seeking shelter under the trees' shade or holding umbrellas. The fortunate few were seated under the limited grandstand space. I could have easily wringed my pagoda shirt!

Against this backdrop, Amir Faiz took the lead in the first 20metres and by about 1-2 feet  took the gold in the 80m dash from 2 yellow house runners. His second gold in consecutive days and an "upgrade" from last year's 30m gold during KAFA Sports Day. He will now represent the school in the next inter-school relay. Perhaps it's time to invest in spikes for him!?

Part 2 - 1st among EQUALS...in SCHOOL!

CP just won his first primary school athletics gold medal when as the first runner, he led the Blue House Team to a relay gold.

In the 80m dash today, CP finished 1st amongst Blue House members and in the process earned the rights to represent Blue House for tomorrow's 80m dash finals.

Hopefully, he can continue from last year's performance and earn a medal in the sprint event (Read 28 April 2013 blogPOST).

Whatever happens though, bragging rights still rests with his Grandparents(Kedah) and Mum(NS) who represented the state in athletics.

Celebrating his CM title being officially registered by FIDE and being Malaysia's Youngest CM , Amir Faiz marked the occasion by winning the 7th title in his career.

CONGRATULATIONS to CM Amir Faiz bin Amirul aka The self-proclaimed cHEss pIRATE (Read HERE) for adding a SEVENTH title to his name i.e. 20th KEPONG JUNIORS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2014 - CHAMPION, U-8 Age Group Category.

In a field of 81 players, Faiz played 7 Games and finished the event with a 100% record of 7 Wins.

Having missed last year's event due to late registration, I registered and paid early this year i.e. on 14 September (almost 2 months early)...and despite that I still missed the early bird gift for the 1st 100 early birds...well that speaks for the response garnered.

CP had played in this event before in 2012 (read 4 November 2012 blogPOST) but I could not accompany him and hAnA due to a public speaking engagement in Yayasan Restu. Hence, it is my first time attending this event and now I know why this event is always "sold out" weeks or even months in advance.

List of plus points:-
(1) Value for Money - for RM25 entrance fee which other event can one think of which also provides lunch(after R3) and tea(after R5)? In addition, participants were given a clip file with the words "Malaysian Book of Records"
(2) Better Prizes - Top 3 winners get a sizeable trophy, cash, a decent hamper and achievement certificate.
(3) Honouring Past Winners - Previous Winners were honoured with a flyer listing the names of all category winners from the 1st year of the event to last year's. Again, I can't recall any event in Malaysia (even for FIDE-rated events) which remembers past winners like Kepong Juniors.

The only glitches were the 19minutes delay in start time compared to event info and the lack of a prayer room(which was rectified by the organisers after a request was made by Muslim parents attending the event).

Overall, I would recommend this event to the chess fraternity to participate in next year. I look forward to coming again next year and seeing CP's name in the Past Winners flyer. Congratulations and well done to the organisers.

OFFICIAL - YOUNGEST Candidate Master(CM) in Malaysia's History, CM AMIR FAIZ!

It's official, FIDE has registered his CM title and in the process making Amir Faiz Amirul @ The cHEss pIRATE as the Youngest Candidate Master (CM) in Malaysia's history. He obtained the CM by virtue of his 2nd place finish (Tie on points with Champion)  at the recent 10th Asian Schools Chess Championship 2014 held in Taichung-TAIWAN. (Read 29 August 2014 blogPOST).

"Discovery" Drive to 1st KTJ Chess Tournament 2014

I can't recall ever travelling to this part of the country before and even if I did it must have been during the last millennium when I was an Islamic banker and financial institutions were basically "giving out" bridging and end financing packages to the plethora of development mushrooming as a result of the construction of KLIA. The drive to KTJ itself and back  to KL using the LEKAS highway was relatively peaceful with low traffic volume.

CP did relatively well by emerging Champion in the U8 category (7th overall in U12) and pocketing RM100. Despite his defeat to the top seed Perak player JGB( who finished  4th in the  MSSM Kuching U12 individual event while CP only placed 8th with 4points), he managed to force his opponent to think till only 3:37 of the 25minutes alloted was left. He also drew with KT who was placed 3rd overall in the 4th round. I do have an issue however with his other draw. As for hAnA, IMO considering she had not played in any event since June's 15th ASEAN Age Group due to UPSR she was "rather steady" with 4.5points from 7 rounds.

On a side note: The main reason for registering hAnA & CP to the event is to "checkout" the KTJ campus itself as I was informed scholarships were being offered.
Upon inquiry, the lady Registrar explained that scholarships(or discounts) of 25%, 50% & 75%  of the fees were offered in about the same ratio e.g. Out of 19 scholarships, 6students@25%, 6@50%, 6@75% and perhaps 1 student will get a 100% scholarship as they are rarely given out. The main criteria apart from academic excellence is an outstanding co-curricular record. She gave the example of students being in KTJ on a tennis or squash scholarship.
On the surface, the infrastructure of KTJ seemed to be better than KYS Melaka. The student demographics were 75% Malaysian students with the rest being foreigners (mostly Mat Sallehs) with Malay students constituting around 20%. The downside for me is when asked about religious activities - the respondent weren't able to answer the question and asked a student to answer...to which he said they organised Raya gatherings etc. Red flags were raised when the student mentioned that he's not a member of the Islamic Society.

@KYS for F1 Entrance Examination.

KYS or Kolej Yayasan Saad have a few students representing Melaka in chess whom I met in this year's MSSM in Kuching. One of the reason for hAnA applying to KYS.

In response to a query by one of the parent during Q&A Session, KYS informed that they'd received around 1,500 applications(it was more than 2k when eldest applied in 2010)...of which only 800 were called for the entrance examination. Out of the 800 who sat for the examinations today only 250 would be selected for the RBS or Residence Based Selection in November...of which only 100 students will be selected. The 100 is further divided into 2 categories i.e. scholarship students (AXIATA, Khazanah & Maxis) and self-sponsored students who'll be paying RM189,000 each in total if they study in KYS until Form 5..

Caught up with A-Level friends and a chess father i.e. Mr.Salleh @Gilocatur who went together to Macau for the 15th ASEAN+ Age Group.

For whatever reason, his coach asked him to play singles during the 2-hours badminton training today.

CP played 5 sets and was totally exhausted when he reached home just before Maghrib.

Its the first time I've been to the school and if not for the tournament would not have realised the school existed even though I've passed by the main road numerous times to either visit my brother, meet up with the company secretary or visit suppliers.

1st PUTERI PANDAN Juniors Chess Tournament - Sat.27/9

Received SMS from one of the KL chess teachers involved in this year's MSSKL & MSSM.

There will be a competition at his school this coming Saturday organised by the school's PTA.
There will be 2 categories i.e. U-12 Boys & U-12 Girls.

6 rounds of 20 minutes each player  will be played and what is different from normal events is that the organisers estimate that prize-giving will be at 2.30PM. Am non-committal for this event as there's supposed to be an entrance examination for entry into Form 1 to be taken by hAnA but due to the UPSR leaks, nothing is confirmed yet.

The 9th Malaysia Chess Challenge 2014 have just been concluded.
Overall, my first impression is that CP had a "so - so" or, dismal performance. The only results of note are his 2 draws against opponents who had beaten him previously i.e. last year's 8th AMBank Challenge and this year's 41st Selangor Open.

However, after comparing against last year's results he had shown all round improvements from points secured, ranking/position and percentile finish. Hopefully, next year a 50% record can be delivered.

20th KEPONG JUNIORS & Inaugural KTJ Chess Tournament 2014, Paid!

Despite the deal made with CP during the 10th ASCC in Taiwan where he can opt not to play until year end if certain KPIs are met, managed to persuade CP to take part in 2 competitions where there are U8 events offered either solely or as part of a bigger group.

The KTJ event though far away in Mantin, NS is more of a recce mission rather than competition proper. Kepong Juniors will be his 2nd participation after 2012 and having to miss last year's event due to unavailability of slots.

Thanks to En.Hamid Majid, CP will be playing in the 9th Malaysia Chess Challenge 2014 tomorrow. His second participation in this event after last year's 8th AMBank Challenge...but, that is only the short story.

The Long Story - Was supposed to go to the World Youth Chess Championship(WYCC 2014) in South Africa...again his 2nd participation in the WYCC after his debut  last year in Al Ain-UAE and had even paid for both the lodgings(MCF) and flight tickets(Emirates). However, due to the ebola situation in Africa where there's a 50% mortality rate for persons infected and especially after it reached Nigeria the family decided against going. (Read 21st August 2014 BlogPOST). Hopefully, the refund from MCF & Emirates Airlines can come soon as it has been more than 3 weeks since we decided to cancel.

Having said the above, CP is not suppose to play in any chess competition till the end of year.
Reason being - as part of the incentive package for either finishing in the Top 3 or, not losing any game at the recent 10th Asian Schools C.C. in Taiwan (Read 29th August 2014 BlogPOST) he had asked that he not play in anymore chess competition till the end of year...UNLESS he feels like it or if there's a call-up. He will decide which event he wants to participate and all I need to do is show him the details of the particular event. An example of which he's agreeable to play in the Kepong Juniors U8 category despite my persuading him to play in the U12 or U10 event...still better than not playing at all I suppose.

Mr. Kumar had even offered to sponsor CP to be in his team for the ASTRO team event which was held from 12 to 13 September. CP had agreed but unfortunately, the dates clashed with some school activities from 9-12.

After some or rather much persuasion, managed to get him to play in the 9th Malaysia Chess
Challenge. However, other concessions were extracted in the bargaining process.

...Finally, a respectable result in international competition for Amir Faiz enabling him to move up a notch from just being a "Jaguh Kampung".
RUNNERS-UP, U7 Open event at the 10th Asian Schools Chess Championship 2014 held at Washington High School in Taichung-TAIWAN.

Finishing with 7 points from 9 rounds, he tied on points with the champion from India but lose out on PE Tie-Break.

As per announcement made during the closing ceremony, the top 3 in the U7 event will be awarded "Candidate Master" or, CM.

Thank You Very Much to the Malaysian contingent for the morale support given and "putting up" with his myriad of emotions. A big thank you to all those in Malayisa who had prayed/doa for him and also for the encouragement given.
Special thanks goes to his coach and former National Champion FT Peter Long and the Polgar Chess Academy for the scholarship extended.

Its Day 3 and things have pretty much settled down. No more kids crying or irresponsible parents shouting instructions....though the odd handphone ringing can be heard at the galley above.

Almost everybody is looking forward to the rest day tomorrow. We've not decided yet whether to go on the excursion organised by the host. It'll depend on how CP performs today and whether he'll be in the mood for an outing tomorrow.

I was happy to be able to view CP's games from the wing stands for Rounds 1 - 3.......that was until some idiotic father from one of the "Stan" countries started shouting something to his son playing in the U5 category. Another mother from the sub-continent had her "loud" phone ringing a few times....perhaps she doesn't know how to put in on mute!?

Due to the above incidences, the Chief Arbiter decided (rightly so!)  to close the wing from Round 4 onwards...and rather reluctantly, I had to use the binoculars for the first time ever in competitions.

10th ASIAN SCHOOLS C.C.2014....Here We Come!

For whatever its worth, 10th Asian Schools C.C.2014....HERE WE COME, TAIWAN!

Initially, I was rather reluctant to enter CP for this event. Mainly because only the classical game will be played compared to the 15th ASEAN+ Age Group in Macau where all 3 versions were played.
Then there were moves to send a team from KL. Anticipating a positive outcome due to KL's MSSM performance, I'd registered CP for the event. Later on, I was informed that a change in Director put paid to those plans.

Hopefully, the trip will be a good one as CP had to forego defending his title at 3rd The Summit Juniors event on departure day (read MalaysianChess 30th June 2013 BlogPOST) and I had to turn down an invitation to be a  Jury member for the 2nd Nusantara Leadership Camp which will be held at Putrajaya from 23-27 August in addition to cutting short my trip up north for a Public Lecture & Working Visit to historical sites around Merbok-Kedah.

WYCC 2014@South Africa - To GO or NOT?

RSC JUNIORS: Another 5th Place.....and some Spending Money for ASCC.

Another 5th place finish in the U-12 event after last week's SStwo event. This time, he finally got some pocket mone to spend in Taiwan for the 10th ASCC which after conversion should get him at least 1k Taiwan Dollars...enough for a daily visit to Come Buy and 7-11 or Family Mart.

Last year he got a prize in the U8 special category (Read 17 Jan. 2013 BlogPOST). Slight improvement this year by getting a prize in the U10 category.

If not for the upcoming 10th ASCC would not have entered CP for this event as would have prefered  to stay in Melaka after the wedding and catch up with family members and relatives.

This is the second time CP is participating in this event after last year's inaugural which was held during the fasting month and he nearly did not make the starting line...well actually he wasn't there at the starting line and only started playing around 5-10minutes after the start! I'd actually written off the first round due to the late start but surprisingly he managed to secure a point.

Though ranked 3rd after 5 rounds and playing on Top Board in the final round, he lost the game mainly due to a King/Queen fork whilst trying to exert time pressure on his opponent who was down to 5 minutes as opposed to his 12-13minutes left. (Lesson Learnt: Another player's initials which I will use constantly to remind him when trying to exert time pressure). As a result he only finished 5th overall and failed to defend his title (Read 20th July 2013 BlogPOST ). By default, he's also the Top U-8 player. His prize for finishing 5th is a hamper but no duit raya for him. Still he's happy with it and shared the spoils with family members who were given the option to chose 1 item each.

One matter that I must commend the organisers is the fact that certificates are issued with the participant's name printed on it. If I recall correctly, there are only 2 other organisers that issues certificates with players' names printed i.e. Louisa Yip's Polgar and the now defunct DCC which was helmed by Najib Wahab.

Furthermore, of the many competitions I've been to in shopping complexes - this event is the most "coziest" mainly due to lack of crowd and as such not as noisy in addition to I can easily spot CP when he's roaming around in between games..

A Call to SPAR.

Whilst in Singapore for Raya celebrations, received a call followed by a few sms from a parent who wanted CP to spar with his kid in preparation for the 10th Asian Schools in Taiwan later this month.

I'd warned him that I don't see how CP can help his kid as he's playing in the U7 category and is relatively weak compared to his kid who'll Be playing in a higher category i.e. either U9 or U11 but he said its OK. I supposed it'll be a good way to start preparing CP for the event as well.

1498 - Faiz's Maiden FIDE Rating

Finally, after umpteens (12x) participation in FIDE-rated classical events, he got his FIDE-rating for the classical game...thanks mainly to his recent performance in the 8th Asian Dragons U-16 tournament  in Taiwan where HE got 2points against 5 FIDE-rated Players.

Am not really bothered by what his rating is as his game would commensurate with the published ratings. The savings from a reduced entrance fees is the reason for the celebrations. As an example, if I were to register him for the Johor or Penang Open - I'll save RM50 per event.

Having said the above, I was always under the impression that a player needs to have played against at least 10 FIDE-rated players and getting at least 1point before getting a maiden rating. What I don't understand is even though he secured 3points, why is getting a rating after playing against only 9 players? Perhaps, the newly introduced rules have something to do with this.

Hopefully, as a result of this the pairings when HE participate in the 10th Asian Schools C.C. Later this month would be in his favour.

" 8th Asian Dragons Invitational " - My FIRST chess ARTICLE @ChessASIA

In between TV shoot for a few pre-recorded Hari Raya episodes and was highlighted of an article published in a chess media.

Earlier this year, the Chairman of a local newspaper suggested/offered me to write a chess column or chess news for a local newspaper since I have been attending a few local and 1-2 International competitions with the kids. I was non-commital mainly because I had to write in the National language.

Last week, CP and I went to Taiwan under KLCA's banner upon the invitation of the Chinese Taipei Chess Association. During the event, managed to co-write an article with Elsa Yueh who was the Chief Arbiter for the event.

Prize Presentation, Open Event - 8th ASIAN DRAGONS 2014

For some strange reaon(s) the organsisers invited me to present the prizes for the Open event.

It was announced during the ceremony that I was presenting the prizes for the open event by virtue of KLCA's first participation in the tournament.

KLCA players performed honorably at the 8th Asian Dragons which concluded today at the Banqaio Stadium, New Taipei City. In a rare occurrence for local chess, a Malaysian player managed to win an International FIDE-rated event. Zaidan Zulkipli had to win his final game to ensure victory as a draw would enable Koji Noguchi (should he win) from Japan to pip him on tie-break. Zaidan did win against upcoming Dai Wenzhi from China (Dai had defeated Koji and drew with top seed FM Lee from Korea) and ensured the title by half a point from Koji who did win.

Shreyes Subramaniam playing in the U-16 category finished Runners-Up with 7.5points, just half a point behind Ieong Seak Hin from Macau. Despite finishing second (which is OK in my books) he was not happy with his performance especially in the loss to Ieong and drawn game against Wang Ting-Hao.

Based on my conversation with the organisers after the closing ceremony, they are keen to invite Zaidan and Shreyes again for next year's event.

As for the baby of the team and the Youngest Player in the tournament i.e. Amir Faiz, in my books he exceeded my expectations by getting more than 1 point in the U-16 category. Based on this performance and the number of FIDE-rated players he'd played against, he's just 1 FIDE-rated player away from getting his maiden classical rating which would then translate to some costs savings. 2 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses should be enough for him to claim some form of rewards from his grandparents when they come back from umrah next month.

Finally, a special thank you to the hosts i.e.Chinese Taipei Chess Federation for extending the invitation to KLCA. Special mention goes to Dina Chen, Henry Liu  and Elsa Yueh for being good hosts during our stay in Taiwan. 

KLCA Players at the HALFWAY point of 8th ASIAN DRAGONS 2014

Its rest day for the event and after 5 rounds over 3 days, 2 players representing KLCA put up a decent if not impeccable performance.

Leading the charge in the Open event with a 100% record i.e. 5 Wins in 5 Rounds is 3rd seeded Zaidan Zulkipli. After a "smoking" 3hours plus game against K-Pop Korean, he basically sparred with the national team of Taiwan from Rounds 2 to 5. His real test will however come in the second half of the event starting with Round 6 tomorrow where he plays black against 2nd seeded Koji Noguchi of Japan. If he can successfully fend of the Samurai attack from the Land of the Rising Sun, I expect him to play against other dragons in the form of the top seed FM from the Korean Federation and also youngster DW from China.

Shreyes Subramaniam is joint 2nd on tie-break with 3.5 points after a surprising loss in Round 5 to the current half-way point leader from Macau. He has to win the next 4 rounds to have a shot at the title. Barring a slump in performance, he should be amongst the Top 5 prize winners come Friday.

As for the cHEss pIRATE Amir Faiz, well what can I say - I'd hoped that since he'll be competing in the U16 category, he will at least get a point and not repeat his dismal performance in this year's KL Open. Lo and behold, wonders do exist in chess and he'd achieved the 1 point target on the second day of competition. Presently, he's joint 13th and if he plays against another 2 FIDE-rated players in he remaining 4 rounds he should be able to get a FIDE rating for the classical game by the time he sets foot again in Taiwan next month for the 10th Asian Schools Chess Championship in Taichung.

Malaysian NR for July to September 2014, Issued.

The Malaysian National Ratings(NR) to be used for local competitions in the 3rd Quarter of 2014 have been issued by MCF.

Considering that there are at least 4 FIDE-rated classical events included in the present list's calculations and coupled with the fact that FIDE have ratings for all 3 categories, perhaps its about time that MCF issues NR for all 3 categories.

Having said the above, there do exists an unofficial NR of sorts for the Blitz event. Refer HERE.
The blitz ratings initiative introduced by cerdikcatur uses the harkness system which was a precursor to the present elo rating system introduced by FIDE.

MCF might also want to consider issuing the NR on a monthly basis as per FIDE to reflect the changing dynamics of chess.

In the latest release both hAnA and CP increased their ratings by 104 and 177 respectively to 1415 and 1517. The newest NR places hAnA at number 356 among female players and CP at number 1388 for male players, an improvement of 343 and 2,608 places respectively. 

8th ASIAN DRAGONS 2014 @TAIWAN, Begins.

The 8th Asian Dragons International Chess Tournament 2014 in New Taipei City began today with an official Opening Ceremony at 10AM followed by the 1st Round game at 1PM.

Players from 10 countries are taking part in the event. Apart from host country Taiwan, and other "Dragons" namely Japan, South Korea, Macau and Singapore - other countries represented are China, Panama, USA, Hong Kong and of course Malaysia (via the KLCA Group).

In TAIWAN for 8th ASIAN DRAGONS INTERNATIONAL CHESS TOURNAMENT 2014

Thanks to the Chinese Taipei Chess Association and the link that they have with KLCA, we're in New Taipei City-TAIWAN for the 8th edition of the Asian Dragons.

The group of 4 from KLCA consists of Zaidan Zulkipli, Shreyes Subramaniam, Amir Faiz and I.

Thus far, hospitality extended by the hosts have been superb.
Our flight was delayed slightly and despite coming out from the necessary immigration and customs check around midnight a representative from the Chinese Taipei Chess Association i.e. Mr.Henry Liu was still there at the Waiting Area. Also, having attended a few international competitions this is the first time that an Info Bulletin and Players' Tags have been handed to us at the airport upon arrival. Kudos to the organisers.

My 2nd PPM Finals - ENGLISH Debate. 2014 v. 1987.

1987 was the FIRST time I'd attended the PPM Finals in Pusat Islam KL. Today...or rather Yesterday, I attended the 2014 Finals held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

How things have changed.

The most significant change observed is that the format now is totally different.

Well, it all depends on whether the debate was just for academic purpose or for reality. And, I don't think even the judges really knew and understood about ASEAN. I have met with senior profs on international and strategic studies who think that ASEAN is modelled after EU, which is not correct. I know for certain that many people think that anything to do with Southeast Asian countries is to do with ASEAN, and anything to do with a country's or a national problem or issue is an ASEAN problem, which a wrong perception.

ASEAN is just an association where its cooperation activities are confined only to specific political-security, economic and socio-cultural sectors.

The KDU Debating Association is organising the Kids BP from Friday, 20th June - Sunday, 22nd June at the Damansara Jaya campus.

Eldest and 4 others from her College are taking part i.e. 2teams of 2 persons each and 1 as the adjudicator.

CP finished 4th with 4 wins & 2 losses.
Have no idea who he won against or lost to as the results are not on chess-results.com or published in any website that I know of.

I might Be wrong but this is the FIRST time this year that S.K. TTDI(1) is sending a team to take part in a non-MSSKL Competition.

Just as important is the fact that the school Teachers will Be accompanying the Players. Hence, a welcome break for me...the timing of which is perfect as I have to attend 2 AGMs over the weekend in Saujana Resort and KL.

8th ASIAN DRAGONS INTERNATIONAL CHESS TOURNAMENT 2014 @TAIWAN, Anybody?

An interesting international tournament from 12th to 19th July, mainly for players from Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and surrounding countries like Macau, Hong Kong and South Korea.

Event is more of  "developmental" in nature with 2 categories i.e.:-
(1) Open
(2) U-16 ( Rating NOT above 2200),

Perhaps more suitable for non-muslims as it falls right smack in the middle of Ramadhan.

KLCA plans to send some Players to compete and gain valuable exposure.
