1st Day of FENCING Session

Some INFO on FENCING.

Finally, after a long delay CP attended his first fencing class for the year. Apparently, fencing is one of the core sports (sukan teras) for the school. Hence, the reason for his presence as somebody suggested that he give fencing a try.

The class was held at the Dewan Bakti near TTDI's At-Taqwa Mosque which will revert back to the school hall next week. 6 new padwan fencers joined the session which began at 9.30am, 2 from Standard 2 and the rest from Standard 3. Coach Ghazali was very patient with all the new swashbucklers who were more interested to use the swords as light sabres ala jedis.

As the fencing thingy was all new to me as well, I stayed for the briefing session by the coach as well.  The coach started by introducing the types of swords used for fencing which are the foil, sabre and epee. At first glance they all looked the same to me until the coach started to point out the differences. This was followed by an introduction of the body parts i.e. torso where hits can be made to secure points. Subsequently, other terms were introduced with a demonstration of what they are like parry, lunge, extend, en garde(french for on guard), allez (french for go), french grip etc etc.

The terms seemed to be overwhelming at first but I suppose one will get used to it as time passes. CP seemed to take it in and is looking forward to next week's session and an idea of what needs to be done and prepared in  advance.
