SStwo Mall Chess Championship, Registered

Event INFO

Amir Faiz won the event with 6 wins from 6 games. Report HERE

The venue was good since it's a new mall and the crowds are not in yet since there are still many empty shop lots. Hence, there were not many "disturbances".

Arriving around 8.30-8.45AM, the organiser had almost finished setting-up the playing area. I was thinking that there would be a huge turnout since there were a dearth of competitions for the month of Ramadhan. However, the turnout for the U-12 category was disappointing at best. Perhaps, the fact that a lot of schools are having replacement classes due to the previous haze closure is the main reason....coupled with it being the fasting month, there were only 2 Muslim players in the U-12 category.

Registered CP for the U-12 event of a newly-initiated competition at SS2-PJ, about 10mins drive from home.
After playing 2 events at The Summit @Subang Jaya recently and last year (Read SUMMIT2013 & SUMMIT2012), this would be his 3rd competition in a shopping mall.

I find mall competitions to be a bit more challenging due to the "disturbances" involved.

Now, the question is - CAN he be motivated to play!!??

JULY - SEPTEMBER 2013 NR, Released!

Latest National Ratings:-
hAnA, -5pts & The cHEss pIRATE, -80pts !!!

The JULY - SEPTEMBER 2013 Malaysian National Chess ratings aka NR is available 1 day earlier than advertised.

The NR is to be used for National-Rated competitions held in the 3rd Quarter of 2013 in Malaysia.

Details, can be seen HERE

Both, The cHEss pIRATE and hAnA had moved south i.e. CP by a massive 80points and hAnA 5 points to 1353 & 1408 respectively.

COMMENTS:
"Balance" is restored as I'd always believed that till now, hAnA is the better player than CP.

Based on the info gleaned from the July-September 2013 Ratings Report, the breakdown of the points secured are from 2 events i.e. 1st Kedah Rapid Open(FIDE-rated) in April and 2nd The Summit Juniors Open held on the last day of June. 2 other events participated in were not included as they were not NR I.e. Piala Tun Syed Zahiruddin(UM Open)& 3rd MBPJ Open. Details, as follows:-

The cHEss pIRATE (-80)
-----------------------------
-111.24     1st KEDAH RAPID Open 2013 (FIDE-rated)
31.4729    2nd THE SUMMIT JUNIORS Open 2013

-------
- 79.8
======

hAnA (- 5)
------------
-16.177    1st KEDAH RAPID Open 2013
11.0886    2nd THE SUMMIT JUNIORS Open 2013

-------
- 5.1
======

Note 1: I am curious as to why the Results for the 1st Kedah Blitz Open event which is also a FIDE-rated event is not factored into the calculation of one's NR???

Note 2: Only half a point separated hAnA & the CP in the 1st Kedah Rapid but their points loss, in my opinion is rather extreme.
hAnA finished with 3.5 points and lost 16 points from the event whilst Faiz...finishing half a point back i.e. at 3 points, lost a massive 111 points in the event.

Note 3: Also missing is the results/points from the 2nd Smart Kids event held on the 1st of May 2013 which only the CP participated. Read HERE
The organisers had publicised that the event will be a National Rated event. (Read HERE). Wonder what happened which resulted in the organisers NOT fulfilling their promise.
Perhaps due to "technicalities" the results will only be reflected in the next quarter as per what happened previously to the results of the 2012 RSC Juniors Open & 2nd SK Sri Hartamas Age Group events.

JAKARTA Invite for "Young Ciku v. Old Fxxt!"

( Jakarta )

( Indonesia )

Been quite a while since I met my Indonesian friend PS. Prior to being attached to the Political & Security Co-operation Directorate of the ASEAN Secretariat(ASEC) at Jl.Sisigamangaraja Jakarta (near Blok M), PS had not only arranged transportation for me from the Bandara(airport) to the rumah kos(rented room/house with laundry services) whilst he was in Manila but had also diligently looked for and secured accommodation within walking distance of ASEC.

PS currently works in DPR (the Indonesian equivalent of Malaysia's Parliament) and a few of his articles had been published in The Tempo and a few more respectable publications. He also helps me run the "Laskar Pelangi 177" project in Purwokarta(about 2-3 hours drive from Jakarta) which I'd conceived after watching the LASKAR PELANGI movie. He had a few matters to take care of whilst in KL...one of which involves forging closer ties between Indonesia and Malaysia via a Nusantara Leadership Programme (and I might be involved in...or, rather roped into it as an Organiser and/or Presenter!). During one of our discussions I informed him that the kids had some guidance of sorts from 2 Indonesian players in 2012 & 2013 by virtue of KL engaging them as coaches for the MSSM Chess Competition. (Read HERE).

( Universitas Indonesia - Proposed location of YC v. OF@Jakarta, since the Nusantara/Indonesia Leadership Programme will be held there )

PS indicated that he also plays chess and would like to play against the kids. Over the RM9 per head Durian Buffet in SS2-PJ, he invited the kids to Jakarta for a few round of chess...though he was not convinced that a 6year old CP can play chess let alone beat him! Since the kids have never been to Indonesia, I might just take him up on the offer. Hopefully, Putrajaya gives the greenlight for Malaysia's participation in the Nusantara Leadership programme to be held at Universitas Indonesia in September.

Selamat Menyambut Ramadhan 1434 HIJRAH.

Selamat Menyambut Bulan Ramadhan 1434 Hijrah.
"Semoga kita Mempertingkatkan Ibadah Kita,
Di Bulan Yang Mulia Ini "

Last Ramadhan the kids took part in 2 events. Namely, the Shah Alam Age Group organised by INSOFAR (Read HERE) & the 4th Merdeka Chess Challenge organised by Polgar Chess Academy (Read HERE).

This year, unless there's more competitions being announced - Most probably the cHEss pIRATE would take part in only 1 event (SSTwo) during the fasting month whilst hAnA will give competitive chess a miss!

Why "YOUNG CIKU v. OLD Fxxt"?

Somebody relayed to me - how can you think of a name like that...a tad to disrespectful to John.
Read HERE

My explanation:-
First and foremost, the term "Old Fxxt" does not refer to John per se. It can refer to anyone within a certain age group...and older than the cHEss pIRATE laaa! Kapish!?

...and the name for the event / title?.....Well, in the Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) official blog, it is stated that there would be an event called "LEGEND v. YOUNG TALENT" Match which would be held from 13-19 June 2013 at NCCE. Read HERE.

Hence, I thought....why not a spoof event similar to other spoofs like Weird Al Jankovic's "Eat It" spoof song of MIchael Jackson's "Beat It" (there's also a local version called "Bidin"!) or, the film Hot Shot which was a spoof to Tom Cruise's TOP GUN.

Come on laaaa....John & I have been calling each other "names" since the last millennium!
Sponsors for Part 3 and subsequent parts aré always welcomed, Any Takers??.....Salleh....Nik...???

Debate in BRUNEI...IF....!?

Eldest came back for the customary overnight (OB) weekend prior to the start of Ramadhan.

She mentioned that a few teams....and English Debate being one of them, have been dangled with a carrot to do well in the coming PMR Trials i.e. those who obtains 8As in the trials will be part of a Group or, Entourage who'll be going to Brunei Darul Salam after PMR as part of a "Student Exchange Programme". Details will be given later.

After debating in Thailand ( Read HERE )...and Malaysia, it'll be good if she can be part of the Programme.
Guess i'll have to cut down on my mamak restaurant excursions to save up....just in case...!

CHAMPION U-7 Age Group - 2nd THE SUMMIT JUNIORS Open 2013: AMIR FAIZ b. AMIRUL

CONGRATULATIONS to Amir Faiz bin Amirul aka The self-proclaimed cHEss pIRATE (Read HERE) for adding a second title to his name I.e. 2nd THE SUMMIT JUNIORS Open 2013 - CHAMPION, U-7 Age Group Category. He won his first title last year in the 2012 Malaysia Day Chess Challenge organised by Polgar Chess Academy in Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur (2012 Malaysia Day Challenge Event REPORT & REPORT 2). Well, actually this should have been his 3rd title BUT...Read HERE !

For the record, there were 27 players competing in the U-7 Age Group event held at The Summit shopping complex in Subang Jaya. However, the numbers whittled down to 24 players after 3 rounds of play.
Organiser's U-7 Event REPORT
I suppose the main differences between the 2nd title and the maiden title won by CP is that the 2nd title was won in a National-rated event with 100% record.

Never leaving Board 1 and with 6 Straight Wins, his Performance during the event was almost perfect IF not for the one illegal move he'd made whilst playing Megat Imran in Round 4.
CP's opponents, as per SMS received:-

R1: B1, W. v. Lakshman Kumaraguru (UR). WON, 3 Illegal Moves in 5minutes.
R2: B1, B. v. Nicholas Khow ((UR). WON, 3 Illegal Moves.
R3: B1, W. v. Wong Xin Yi-G (UR). WON, Checkmate.
R4: B1, B. v. Megat Imran (867, 5th Seed). WON, Checkmate.
R5: B1, W. v. Iskandar Haikal (1149, 4pts-3rd Seed). WON, Opponent Surrendered in around 5mins - CP Q promotion.
R6: B1, B. v. Asia Moo-G (1230, 4pts-2nd Seed). WON, C'mate.

6 Wins (100%)
