REVIEW:
The cHEss pIRATE had a good event - finishing with 3.5points(70%). Along the way, defeating 2 higher rated players (1264 and 1330 respectively against his 1157 NR), 1 lower rated player(NR 1100) and drawing with the top seed(NR 1516) in the First Round. Going into the Final Round, for the FIRST TIME ever, The cHEss pIRATE was playing on the First Board but lost to the eventual winner(NR 1500) who was at least thrice his age. As always, he played the rapid event as if he was playing the blitz game and was so focused on checkmating his opponent that he did not see a checkmate coming his way by 1 move earlier...I must make it a point to "force" him to write down his moves to slow him down.
Eldest sister Amira Fathina, waking up from her year-end "hibernation" (as per the norm for Boarding Schoolers) and after a long lay-off from chess to concentrate on debates for 6-7months i.e. Since representing TKC in the MSSNS-Seremban Zone 1 had a "decent" comeback with 2.5points(50%). Her "rustiness" showed as she had to make heavy work of defeating her opponents and even had to concede half a point due to a stale-mate. Hope she could put up a decent performance if chosen to represent the College again as this time, (I Supposed) they(TKC) will be playing in the MSSNS Nilai zone/district.
By her standards, hAnA had a bad event. Though ending with 3points(60%), hAnA seeded 5th lost to 2 lower rated players(NR 1223 & 1157), the 8th seed.......AND another one of which was very, very devastating to her I.e. Losing to her Younger brother aka The cHEss pIRATE - this was despite being elated to read that she'd been paired to face Faiz in the Second Round and being "too confident" and on the verge of being assured of victory and 1point. I hope this loss teaches her the lesson to NOT Underestimate anybody in chess.

5th NATIONAL JUNIORS 2012, Summary
The 5th NJCC concludes today.
It was the first time that the kids are participating in the NJCC event.
hAnA played true to ratings I.e. Losing against higher rated players and winning against lower rated ones.
Having played in the 4th Penang International Heritage City Challenger tournament last week I'd expected a slightly better performance than this from hAnA. I guess it's back to the drawing board then. Her theoretical aspects needs to be addressed since competition alone is not giving the expected outcome. On this matter, she concurs with me - there needs to be a balance between competitions and the theoretical aspects of chess.
As for the cHEss pIRATE, what can I say? He finished last in the field of 56 with only 1point. The 1point however was earned in Round 6 against a player rated at 1330. Thus, maintaining his record of at least an upset per tournament. He also received the token recognition of being the Youngest Participant in the Boys category (the Youngest Girl is 7years old. So, I guess Amir Faiz IS the Youngest Player in the 5th NJCC).
My own analysis of the NJCC is that for Boys...exposure aside, a Malaysian rating of at least 1400-1500 is required to put up a "credible" challenge and finish 'mid-field". Otherwise, one will just be making-up the numbers and end-up as a "Point-Giver".
In the Girls event, a Malaysian Rating of 1300-1400 should be sufficient to put up a credible mid-table/field challenge.
Najib Wahab stated in his blog The Chess Connections that the 5th NJCC 2012 has the lowest turnout ever (BOYS: 2012@56 v 2011@54boys / GIRLS: 2012@19 v. 2011@22players). Since the kids are basically starting from Ground-Zero in the NJCC, hopefully they can only move up with each participation. Looking forward to next year's NJCC...my only wish is for the event to be advertised...MUCH, MUCH Earlier instead of at the last minute.

1st BLITZ event, Participated & Watched
TODAY, was another historical day for the AMfa family. We or, rather the kids participated in their FIRST ever chess blitz event whilst I enjoyed myself watching the blitz. The event was held after the 5th NJCC 2012 prize-giving ceremony and started after 3pm.
Among the rules peculiar to Blitz chess:-
(1) 5 minutes per player
(2) Make One(1) Illegal Move - Player Lose IF, opponent claims.
(3) Fallen Chess Piece(s) - Player Lose IF, he presses the timer before placing back the fallen piece properly.
(4) Need NOT say "check".
Tip: DON'T wear long-sleeved Shirt or Jacket/Sweater to avoid piece(s) falling.
At the end, I believe the kids enjoyed themselves in their first ever chess blitz participation.
( Family Warfare. To the Victors - "Bragging Rights". The cHEss pIRATE and his cousins Ayeesha, Aqil & Arif. Picture, Courtesy of Chess-Malaysia fb)
hAnA finishes at 19th out of 34players with 4 1/2points, making her the 2nd Best female player. She played fairly well against stronger opponents and "almost" got 2 of them into time difficulty...one of which is in the picture below.
( hAna playing against a more "seasoned" player. Picture, Chess-Malaysia fb )
The cHEss pIRATE on the other hand secured 2points, placing him 33rd in the field but not before losing 2 games due to an illegal move and another 2 more games due to a fallen chess piece. In the 1st Round, he had an opportunity to claim a victory when the opponent chess piece had fallen but being new to blitz rules he failed to claim the win. Having said that, seeing him play reminds me of the NAG 2012 where many times he can cause person(s) with heart defficiencies to beat faster. For example, in his match against Wong Zi Yue...he literally won the game by "1 SECOND". Zi Yue would have check-mated hi when the pawn is promoted in the next move....UNfortunately for him BUT Fortunately for the cHEss pIRATE, Zi Yue's time expired just before the promotion. Even the arbiter i.e. Nik Faroqi said "....Sayangnya, just 1 second!"
My initial assesment of chess blitz is that it favours fast thinkers and impulse players like kids. Many a times I'd observed that adults tend to "overthink". There was also "entertainment" especially amongst the boys when they started poking fun at each other to dustract their opponents. Amongst phrases heard "...what, you lost to a little girl?", "...your nose is droping..." and many more which I do not want to write. An enjoyable 1st blitz for me.

Round 6:
B09: W. hAnA v. Noor Zainoor Ikmal Munir (NR 1272, ranked 15th). WON, finally she got her first point(NOT including Bye point obtained in Round 3) against an opponent rated just 8points ahead of her i.e. 1272 against hAnA's 1264. However, she had to make heavy work of it. I believe her 7-year old opponent will be somebody to keep an eye out for in the coming years.
B25: B. Faiz v. Kughan Ravindran (NR 1552, ranked 30th). lost in 45moves in just under 45minutes. Time Remaining, Faiz@1:33 & opponent@1:30.
Round 5:
B08: B. hAnA v. Noor Zainoor Ikmal (FIDE 1639, ranked 6th). Lost in 77moves after choosing to support 2 pawns down the board instead of moving king to support single pawn promotion.
B25: W. Faiz v. Mohd Radzuan (NR 1317, ranked 47th). lost in 33moves. Time Remaining, Faiz@1:33 & Opponent@1:23.

B28. W. cHEss pIRATE v. Thanabalan Kabilan (NR 1330, ranked 45th). The Pirate WON against a player rated 173 points higher than him despite the initial early loss of QUEEN. As per recent 4th Penang Heritage City International - Challenger Section, he seemed to average per tournament, an upset against a higher rated player.
( The cHEss pIRATE lost his Queen earlier in this game but still managed to upset a player rated 173 points higher than his NR of 1157 ).

Day 1 Blog Reports, HERE & HERE2
Round 2:
B09: W. hAnA v. Tan Wei Ting(NR 1399, ranked 13th).

B27: B. Faiz v. Low Hong Ben(NR 1390, ranked 41st). lost in 40moves. Time remaining, Faiz@1:27 & Low@1:32.
Round 1:
B07: B. hAnA v. Nur Faqihah Aminuddin(FIDE 1635, ranked 7th). Lost, position deteriorated when she didn't see the king-rook check trap coming in 2moves. Then miscalculated a 2-pawn exchange which resulted in her losing her last remaining good piece I.e. Bishop.
B23: W. Faiz v. Loh Zu Hao(NR 1660, ranked 26th). lost

The 5th NJCC 2012 Begins today at the DATCC-KL.
After attending the efficiently run FIDE-rated 4th Penang Heritage City International event last week in which the entrance fee for the kids were RM200each(as they were NOT PCA members & also not FIDE-rated, it's back to Malaysian chess reality I.e. Games starting late and another unkept promise of publishing the players' list despite stating it on the form...BTW, the entrance fee for this event is RM100 each due to the kids not being fide-rated.
In a seldom occurring event the girls and boys are playing against each other and not in an open competition as per the norm. hAnA, with a National Rating of 1264 starts the tournament ranked 17th out of 20 participating girls listed. hAnA's brother I.e. the cHEss pIRATE with a NR of 1157 is ranked second last in the field I.e. 55th out of 56 players. I think he would have been ranked last if not for the fact that player no.56 is unrated. Should be good exposure for both of them.

5th NJCC 2012, Forms Submitted & Fees Paid
The 5th National Juniors Chess Championship(5th NJCC 2012) will be held from 18-22 December at DATCC-KL. It is open to only Malaysians, aged 20years and below I.e. Those born in 1992 or, earlier.
Right till early December the dates were not announced yet and considering that it's a "National" event, albeit a junior one I find it rather perplexing that such an event is only fixed at the 11th hour.
Had enrolled the kids to participate in the 5th NJCC 2012 and had submitted the forms and made the payment personally to Najib Wahab(who was on the way to Sg.Petani and was making a pit-stop in Penang) since participants are supposed to submit direct to any one of the named persons stated in the NJCC 2012 form as no registration via telephone or SMS are accepted.
On Page 2 of the NJCC form, it also states that the players list will be out on 16th December. Unfortunately, as at the time of this blogpost I.e. 10.17am on 17 December and after checking the following sites I.e. http://malaysianchessfederation.blogspot.com/ & http://njcc2012.blogspot.com/ , NO such list exists. I suppose I'd referred to the wrong sites. Well......emmmm......
Should be good exposure for hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE. Come 2013, Will be more selective as to which events to enter them in subject to budget considerations.

Being the first International FIDE-rated event I'd attended and the kids participated in I find that the event was efficiently run despite hesitating to participate initially due to the high costs and highest ever entrance fees that needs to be forked out. Read HERE.
From the onset, the organiser was quick to respond to email queries...normally within 24hours (unlike the organiser of the recent RSC Juniors who have yet to reply to my 2 email queries after weeks). Games ran on time (unlike most Rapid events be it NR event or unrated events). Apart from the top board playing their game on stage and the game being webcasted live, another interesting observation is the availability of players' signages with their name, country flag and current FIDE rating. Kudos to the organisers especially Mr.Tan.
It was a learning experience for both hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE participating in their first ever FIDE-rated Classical tournament with an international field. hAnA played against 3 Singaporeans and 1 Indonesian boy registered for the U-8 category whilst the cHEss pIRATE dueled with 3 Singaporeans. hAnA played true to ratings I.e. Winning against lower rated players and losing to higher rated ones. Similarly, the cHEss pIRATE won against a lower rated player and lost to higher rated ones albeit one when he caused an upset in Round 6 against a player rated more than 150points ahead of him.
A positive development I'd observed is that hAnA is starting not only to analyse her own game and re-writing her moves on another record sheet but is also writing comments
as to what she'd learnt from each game. As for the cHEss pIRATE...well I don't know what he's thinking or learned from 4th Penang Heritage City event, hope he'd picked up some pointers.

DAY 3:
Story of the day for me is cHEss pIRATE's defeat of his 6th round opponent who is Malaysian-rated 153points ahead of him I.e. 1310 as opposed to Faiz's 1157. Good 16th Wedding Anniversary present for me.
Another identical score day for both I.e. 2wins & 4losses.

Story of the day is the 2nd defeat of GM Richard Bitoon.

B50: B. hAnA v. Tan Jia Jin (MAS - 1155). WON, checkmate in 52moves after opponent was given 2 warnings for illegal moves. She should have won earlier.
DAY 1:
The story of Day 1 MUST BE be the defeat of Filipino GM Bitoon Richard(2437) the 3rd ranked player to Malaysian Tan Khai Boon (2139),ranked 30th which was played on the 3rd board with the GM playing Black.
It was a good game to watch as both had to move 'fast' due to time constraints. At one time TKB had asked for a draw when he was faced with time limitations even though he was in a more superior positional and tactical position but GM turned it down. I guess he must have wished that he had accepted the draw.
Another report, HERE
Played 2, lost 2 - Identical Scores for both hAnA & the cHEss pIRATE.
Round 2 (pm)
B41: W. Faiz v. Miss Su Wen Xin (MAS, NR 1334). lost, c'mate in 23moves after forgoing strong tactical & positional advantage and 'strange' castling choice.
B54: W. hAnA v. Master Kemas Ade Krisna Suri(INA, UR). lost in 3x moves in a game completed in just under 30minutes.
Round 1(am)
B08: B. v. Jonathan Kow(Fide1716 - SIN, ranked 8th). lost in 35moves.
B16: B. v. Dinesh (Fide1640 - MAS, ranked 16th). lost

Earlier in October, had contemplated entering the kids door this event - Read HERE
Having a "window opening" up due to a cancelled family trip and a rescheduled production coupled with some "gifts" and having secured decent family accommodation
...with some apprehension, today I'd just deposited 2x RM200 into the Penang Chess Association bank account at UOB Bank, Kota Damansara branch.
The amount deposited are the entry fees for hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE i.e. RM200each to participate in the Challenger Section of the 4th Penang Heritage City Chess tournament to be held from 10-15 December 2012 at the Red Rock Hotel.
The Penang Journey, will be the family's 2nd Road Trip for chess purposes (its supposed to be the 3rd, Read HERE) .......with the first trip being made to Kuala Terengganu in June of this year for the MSSM Chess Tournament where hAnA represented the FT of Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya in the Girls U-12 Team event. Read HERE, HERE2, HERE3, HERE4, HERE5 & HERE6.
This time around, the cHEss pIRATE will be in the 'thick of action' as well and am hoping that he'll be able to get many opponents to "walk the plank" so to speak!

CP: 3 WINS, 1 Draw & 3 losses(50%).

Overall, it was a Good competition for hAnA(71%) who is seeded 20th as she'd sprung a surprise when defeating the 3rd seed i.e. Hazid(NR:1502) in the 5th Round. Her losses were to the Top Seed(NR:1660) in Round 6 and Unrated Muhd.Ilhan who finished Joint 9th with her on 5points but, placed 12th due to better tie-breaker scores.
Though it was a 50% tournament for the cHEss pIRATE, his was a slightly below average performance mainly due to a draw with the lower rated Haibatul Hanan(seeded 70th) in the 4th Round. Apart from the draw, the cHEss pIRATE who is seeded 43rd played true to form as his victories were against lower-rated players i.e. Unrated, 81st seed and 61st seed respectively whilst his losses were against higher-rated opponents i.e. seeded 14th, 16th and 33rd respectively.

Amongst the very few "mass scale" event to publish the 1st round pairing a day in advance, HERE. GOOD JOB!
>>>>>>>
After a few "difficulties" I'd finally managed to register the 2 kids for the event.
RM60 cash, deposited on 15/11 at the MBB Cash Deposit machine at Damansara Utama - 9.08pm.
As both my wife and I will be attending a training programme in Kelana Jaya ( HERE ), this would be the 1st time that my eldest will be the Manager for hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE.

TV3 interview with The cHEss pIRATE @Summit
Had a bad flashback when "AMIR FAIZ bin AMIRUL" name was announced over the PA System...A FEW TIMES... at the Summit Shopping Complex in Subang. The incident occurred between Rounds 4 and 5 of the chess competition.
Was thinking - " What did he do this time??? " as He'd went "AWOL" at 1 Utama & 2 Hotels in previous years. After a frenzied search on the Ground Floor, I spotted him...with a TV Crew in attendance. Whew...what a relief!!!
The organiser and TV3 crew informed me that they are interviewing the CP by virtue of him being the YOUNGEST PARTICIPANT in the 1st SUMMIT JUNIORS Open competition.
(Stage Where the CHEss pIRATE was Interviewed by the TV3 Crew. Picture: FireyRook Blog)
Among the questions asked(in Malay) whilst the CP was standing on the Stage were:-
(1) What is Your Name?
(2) How Old Are You?
(3) Why Did You Play Chess - Interest, Somebody Taught You etc?
(4) Who Taught You to Play Chess?
(5) Have You Won Anything?
....all in the interview lasted 10-15minutes as I was also interviewed by the crew (sitting down on the stage) as well since CP was in a bad mood having lost a few games prior to the interview.

13/11 UPDATE: Finally, on the last day - After 2 "bonus" points earlier in the Nf6 Junior tournament, a decent half point from hAnA in a drawn game against Amir Muqri in Round 8.

Despite being ill, stubborn hAnA took part in the Nf6 event held in Taman Tun Dr.Ismail, Kuala Lumpur on a wet evening.

Unfortunately, she lost in the 1st Round to G.Bick(USA) whilst playing White.
Tomorrow, she'll be playing Black against Norshafaah. Due to the late kick-off tonight as a result of rain and logistical delays, the Second and Third Round tomorrow will start at 10.30am & 3.30pm respectively.

WOMEN's Open Debating Championship 2012 (WODC2012) @UiTM, Shah Alam
Amira Fathina is taking part in the WODC 2012 at UiTM, Shah Alam starting from today till Sunday, 11 November 2012. What is different from the normal debate competition she participates in is that as the event name suggests - it is a WOMEN's ONlY competition.
After participating in the 1st ASEAN Educational Debate Challenge in Chiangmai-Thailand, last August...this event should be a walk in the park for her.
All the Best Amira Fathina and do Carry On the Family's debating traditions.

UPDATE: 11/11 Story, HERE
>>>>>>>
Event Details/Update HERE.
Initially, hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE was supposed to play in this event and I'd even paid for it over the Maybank Counter in TTDI on 22nd October. However, on Saturday 3/11 - CS informed me that there'll be a FIDE-rated event in TTDI, Read HERE.
The event is called the Nf6 Junior Chess. Details, HERE.
Hence, taking cognisance of the fact that hAnA is NOT FIDE-rated yet coupled with the fact that the event is so near to home I'd withdrawn her from the 1st Summit Open and her place will be replaced by her cousin Ariff(NR: 1175).
Am hoping, that the cHEss pIRATE will put up a credible showing in the U-10 category...and what I meant by credible is at least a 50% winning record IF not better.
SWASHBUCKLE(Play) HARD cHEss pIRATE, I am sure that if you play well - many opponents will "WALK the PLANK".

Nf6 JUNIOR Chess Championship 2012, FIDE-Rated Event in TTDI-KL
UPDATE 9/11:
hAnA's participation in this event is questionable after having to bring her to the clinic around 1-2am today due to breathing difficulties. The attending doctor I.e. Dr.S says that she's in no condition to take part in any activity whatsoever. However, I have my own opinion and hopes that she recovers fast after bring given certain medications.
If she were to miss this event, am hoping that the organisers will accept Her brother i.e. The cHEss pIRATe as a last minute replacement.

Rcvd a SMS on Saturday,3/11 from CS informing of a FIDE-rated invitational tournament to be held in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail(TTDI) - Kuala Lumpur. The organisers had extended an invitation to KL players via CS to participate in the event scheduled from 9 till 13 December 2012 and that there are 4 more slots available.
A check through Malaysia's chess blogs revealed the following additional info for the event in TTDI I.e.
The Chess Connections
Syazrin.Com
Apparently, the Nf6 Junior chess event is part of the Nf6 Masters event.
Even though I'd registered and paid for Hana's participation in the 1st Summit Open on Sunday, 11/11, how can I not register hAnA taking cognizance of the fact that the event is so close to home. Moreover, we were also planning to take part in another FIDE - rated event i..e the 4th Penang Heritage City scheduled to be held in Mid-December 2012. Read HERE.
Participating Players(as per SMS rcvd on 4/11@11:02pm) are:-
(1) 1539 - M.Faqih
(2) 1549 - Amir Ghaazi
(3) Lim Ming Xian
(4) Lim Ming Kang
(5) Siti Aishah Abd. Aziz
(6) Shafaah Zamri

(9) 1383 - Amir Muqhri
.......and the 10th person invited is AMIRA FARHANA bt.AMIRUL (1264).

Another info that i'd received is that in order to be FIDE-rated, hAnA will have to earn AT LEAST 1 point from all her 9 Round-Robin games.

Venue Recce - 18th Kepong Juniors 2012
I've to present a Paper discussing Shariah Money & the Constitution at an event called HIKMAH in Shah Alam's Yayasan Restu this Sunday. Hence, I am unable to accompany the kids to the 18th Kepong Juniors Open 2012.
The "Minister of Home Affairs" will have to step up and "stepped-up" she did when she went to recce the event venue as we rarely go to Kepong except when using the MRR2. She found the venue i.e. SJKC Kepong 2.......thanks to directions from our neighbour, S.
Am hoping that the kids will do well coz Based on previous events when I wasn't around i.e. Malaysia Day Chess Challenge and 2nd SK.Seri Hartamas Age Group, track record dictates a good showing.

4th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open-Challenger - Under Consideration!
UPDATE 1@31/10:
Received 4 email replies from the Organiser(Mr.Tan) & Venue Hotel.
Till this point Mr.Tan is very efficient and responds quickly to my email queries UNLIKE some other organisers who'll list their email address in the blog(s) and/or application form(s) but NEVER replies to email queries.
The Venue hotel & Mr.Tan had also responded to my rates query I.e RM145nett per night c/w a Big Bed & 2 Breakfast.

Louisa from PCA-SH suggested that I send the 2 kids to participate in the above-mentioned event. hAnA needs to "graduate" to the classical game rather than just playing rapids whilst it'll be "good exposure" for the cHEss pIRATE.
Upon checking the Event's website, HERE I realised that the fees alone per person is RM200(being a non-PCA player)...more than whatever fees that I'd paid before. If I recall correctly, the highest fees I'd ever paid for a chess event is RM40 or, RM50 for the National Age Group (NAG 2012) organised by the MCF in March 2012 near the Olympic Hotel, KL. At an average entrance fees of RM25 per chess event/competition, RM200 is enough for 8 competitions.
Estimated Expenses for Event:-
(1) RM 400 Entrance Fees @RM200 x 2pax I.e. AF2 & AF3
(2) RM 1,320 Accommodation @RM220 x 6Days (Tune Hotel)
(3) RM 140 Toll @70 x 2Ways (KL - Butterworth - Penang Bridge - KL)
(4) RM 250 Petrol @ 125Per Full Tank x 2 Fillings
(5) RM 500 Food & Incidentals
--------
RM 2,610 WOW.....

Let me first check with the organisers as to wether participants for the Challenger event will be FIDE-rated or, not. Otherwise, they'll be no point entering I suppose!?

a ROUND with UNCLE JOHN.
Friday UPDATE: After being treated for dinner by Pak Long Akbar at Zorro Cafe, nearby the ZON at Stulang...the cHEss pIRATE was feeling cocky and asked Pak Long to drop by at AmanSari for a game. If not for the traffic crawl at Jln.Wong Ah Fook, the game would probably have taken place. Alas,...it was not to be, YET!

hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE are in JB for the raya holidays to visit their uncles and relatives.
After telling them of the game I saw Uncle John aka Faizal playing against one of his opponent during A-level days in the dormitory of 51C-DU where the opponent disrupted the game by "felling the chess pieces" both of them wanted a "piece of Uncle John".
cHEss pIRATe played 1 game at Menara Landmarks and another game at Amansari whilst hAnA played 1 game against Uncle John at Amansari.
Cheers Mate.
PS: Used to play long distance against Uncle John....perhaps need to recommence the Game.

After 2 NO-SHOWS and a POSTPONED event in Shah Alam which was supposed to be held on 3/11,I decided to register hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE for 2 events to be held over consecutive weeks.

INSOFAR Scholarship, OCT. - Another NO Show!
Having had to skip the UPSI Open in mid-October due to the examinations season, hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE had wanted to take part in the October's edition of Insofar Scholarship tournament...and I'd even registered them by sending a SMS to Raja Aiza(012-3415030) on 15/10
However, due to late Partcipation Notice(s) given (at the 11th Hour, so to speak)by learning institution for an event which require their participation the kids would have to give the event a miss. The duo had really wanted to use the RM50 vouchers won in the Insofar Shah Alam Age Group in July ( Read, HERE )...seems like we have to save the voucher for at least another month then.

cHEss pIRATE is a SPENT Force!!!
After a hiatus of a couple of months, the cHEss pIRATE restarted theory classes at PCA-Sri Hartamas,KL.
When he came back after back-to-back classes, he was "dead to the world" till around 5pm. Must have did some "heavy thinking" in class.

6th UPSI Open 2012 - Have to Give It a Miss
As far back as August, the family had planned to participate in the 6th UPSI Chess Open 2012...In line with the "getting a few things done" whilst traveling to places which we would normally have no reason to go to. Tanjung Malim-Perak D.R. is one such destination.
However, the exam season put paid to those traveling intentions especially since hAnA have to "REDEEM Herself" after her "disastrous" mid-year performance this year where she'd placed in a never heard before position of 6th, mainly due to her frequent class-skipping. There were just too many days(my Guestimate is about 3weeks in total or more) spent away from school due to chess competitions(Bangsar Zone & KL Finals) and training sessions(MSSM KT preparations) as well as choral speaking appearances in TV3, NTV7 & RTM plus exhibitions.
All the best to the organisers. Hope you all take into account of the academic examinations timetable when planning for next year's event.

The LATEST Ratings Are Out: October - December 2012
The October-December 2012 Malaysian National Chess ratings aka NR were just released.
Details, can be observed HERE.
Both hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE had improved I.e. by 22 & 42 to 1264 & 1158 respectively. Would be great to see the spreadsheet as to where exactly their points were collected from.
COMMENTS:
(To Be Continued, when more details are available)
The AMfa FAmily's latest NR are as follows:-
(1) cHEss pIRATE = 1157 (+45)
Gathered from 2 competitions:-
A. CAS 23rd Selangor Juniors Open ( + 8 )
B. 3rd Swensen Open ( + 36.8 )
NETT = 44.8 + 1112 (Previous Ratings)
Note:
Participated in 3 Unrated Event; Insofar Shah Alam(July), Malaysia Day Chess Challenge(Sept) & 2nd SK Seri Hartamas Age Group(Sept.)
(2) hAnA = 1264 (+22)
Accumulated from ONLY 1 tournament:-
A. CAS 23rd Selangor Juniors Open ( + 22 )
NETT = 22 + 1242
For both AMira FAthina (1077) & AHM (1383), there were NO CHANGEs. Both, did not take part in any competition.
Note: It is such a pity that 2 competitions (I.e. Malaysia Day Chess Challenge organised by PCA & 2nd SK Seri Hartamas Age Group) both held in September which they both participated and did rather well were not rated. Otherwise, both would have improved even further.

hAnA's BEST Tournament - 2nd SK Seri Hartamas Age-Group Chess Championship, 2012
The 2nd SK Seri Hartamas Age-Group Chess Championship held on Saturday,29th September 2012 in Sri Hartamas,KL is easily hAnA's best performance ever in a chess competition since she started participating in Chess competitions since the last Quarter of 2011.
She won 5 out of 6 games and was tied on 5points with the U-10 Girls Winner(Evelyn Tan Eng Thong) and Runners-Up(Lum Ting Fang). However, despite having the same points hAnA lost out on count back to Evelyn and Lum.
To analyse her performance; 1242 is hAnA's NR.
Her opponents NR are:-
R6: 1112. WON. Amir Faiz bin Amirul (cHEss pIRATE)
R5: 1246. WON. Ivan Sean Yap
R4: 1234. WON. Nur Faiqah Aminuddin.
R3: xxxx. LOST. Muhd Aqil Nabil.
R2: 1238. WON. Cheah Kah Hoe.
R1: xxxx. WON. Amer Lokman Hakim
Note 1: "xxxx" denotes "Not Rated" or, "Unable to Track Ratings".
Note 2: Theoretically, based on only the NR she should have won ALL her games save for the opponent in Round 5...who is only rated 4points higher than her.
The Best Prize ever received by hAnA in her short Chess playing career, consists of:-
(1) RM80 Cash
(2) Gift Hamper
(3) Medal(Bronze)
(4) Certificate of Achievement
Note: hAnA's previous best prize was when she received RM50 for placing 9th in the U-12 Mixed Category at MBPJ Open held on 23 June 2012 at the Community Hall, Petaling Jaya. See Results HERE

2nd SK Seri Hartamas KL Age Group 2012 - Postal Invitation
UPDATE 2:
"Received with thx". SMS rcvd fm 017-2898215 ( xxx ) at 7:29:43am today in response to my SMS registration yesterday of hAnA & cHEss pIRATE for the 29/9 event.
UPDATE 1:
Payment of RM40 for 2players made at HLBB, Sri Hartamas branch after Friday Prayers.
YESTERDAY, for the FIRST TIME EVER...the kids received via Post, an Information Flyer and an Application Form for a chess championship to be held on Saturday, 29th September 2012. HAnA and the cHEss pIRATE were of course very excited as they very, very, very SELDOM receive any letters addressed to them.
During Dinner, I'd asked the kids as to whether they wanted to participate in the event and both replied in the affirmative.
I supposed the intended objective of sending the Postal Invitation were achieved. Now I just need to confirm with the organisers as to whether the event is a rated event or not.

4R: v. Brian (W)
3R: v. Amirul (W)
2R: v. Arrveen (W)
1R: v. AQIL (L)
Some General observations after sending hAnA:-
(1) "Value" prizes on offer I.e. Food hampers
(2) Rather Amateurish 1st attempt yo organise a chess event by PTSP as players have no timers and are supposed to bring their own chess set.
(3) "Poor" response as only 7players registered.
(4) Having said the above, entrance fee is ONLY RM5.00...so what more can one expect!

Everybody seemed to be jumping on the chess bandwagon nowadays. The latest is hAnA's Tuition Centre I.e. Pusat Tuisyen Sahabat Pintar(PTSP) located in Taman Tun Dr.Ismail, KL.

cHEss pIRATE "kidNAPPED".......to Play Chess!
hAnA informed me that the cHEss pIRATE was kidnapped to play chess today when he went to a KAFA friend's open house cum birthday party. Apparently, some elder boys were not happy that a 5-year kid had beaten them and demanded a rematch.
Double-checked with the cHEss pIRATE and he said that he played 5games against some elder boys...and WON All! WaQAQA....first time I heard "Kidnapped, To Play Chess".

U-7 CHAMPION - 2012 MALAYSIA DAY CHESS CHALLENGE: AMIR FAIZ b. AMIRUL
( PCA MALAYSIA DAY CHESS CHALLENGE 2012, Official Results - Written which was Pasted on the Wall for the U-7 Category. Picture: Snapshot fm Amir Faiz's Mum Handphone )
Ever since I came back from Kuantan, it has been a busy week....Post-training Debrief & Report, shooting for 2 TV episodes(Episodes 11 & 12) of Islamic Finance@The Capital TV, Preparing for 2 presentations on 15/9(Moneytree-Sri Hartamas)titled "MONEY-What Is & History" & 18/9(IIUM-PJ)titled "throw BRICs to the PIGS" and countless office and mamak restaurants meetings.....even now I'm preparing my slides for a "MONEY" Talk for tomorrow's Moneytree Graduation ceremony in Sri Hartamas.
( The cHEss pIRATE is Elated and Feeling Over the Moon & Raising the Bar )
Only today, or rather NOW it dawned upon me that my son the self-proclaimed cHEss pIRATE ( Read HERE )had won a chess title...HIS FIRST, even though it was not a nationally rated event. It is also a welcomed change as compared to just getting consolation/special prizes for being the Youngest Participant in a competition.
Results HERE
It would be good if I had the match records to analyse his results rather than just the final results.
Note: This should have been the cHEss pIRATE's 2nd U-7 title.

hAnA also did better than normal in the Open Category finishing 4th on 5points with the 2nd & 3rd Placed player but lost out on 1st Tie-Break BH. She was also the BEST GIRL/Female participant but since the 4th prize in the Open Category is deemed "more prestigious" by the Organisers, the Best Female Participant's prize went to another participant who secured 3points.

Whilst the creme de la creme of Malaysian Chess is fighting for the Country in Turkey, mere mortals like the cHEss pIRATE and hAnA would have to make do with a Non-Rated event to be held in Sri Hartamas tomorrow called the "MALAYSIA DAY CHESS CHALLENGE".
This would be the first event where I won't be with the kids at all due to some other previous engagements. Time for the mum to STEP-UP.
Instructions have been given. Let's see whether the Mum can execute, mainly:-
(1) To Slow Down his "thought process" the cHEss pIRATE is supposed to note his games.
(2) Pre-event practise matters I.e.Day b4 and on event date.

3rd SWENSEN OPEN RAPID AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIP, 2012
UPDATE:
cHEss pIRATE FAIZ ended with a 50% record gathered from 3 wins.
He Placed 23rd(StartingRank29) out of 49players with a BH of 18.
3pts were placed between 19th(BH 20.5) to 28th(BH 15.5 @ Asia Moo)
His 3rd 50% record after POLGAR May Day Challenge and INSOFAR Age Group, Shah Alam in July.
He also won a Special Prize of a Chess Set from Cerdik Catur Enterprise for being the YOUNGEST male participant at 5years, 5months, 3weeks and 2days. Coincidentally, Faiz had also received a hamper from Cerdik Catur in another event held in June - HERE
R6: WON. (W, Bd.13) Loh Xiong Yi(1219), Checkmate.
R5: LOST. (B, Bd.10) Nur Faiqah Aminuddin(1234), Checkmate.
R4: LOST. (W, Bd.6) Wong Zi Yue(1266), Checkmate.
Note: Also Wasted Time due to Timer NOT Pressed & Restroom Break
R3: WON. (B, Bd.9) Irfan Hakimi Irman(1180), Checkmate
R2: WON. (W, Bd.20) Tan Hougen(1128), 3 Illegal Moves(Green Cards)
R1: LOST. (B, Board 9) Ivan Sean Yeap(1246), Queen Blunder
Note:
His Cousins Arif placed 11th in U-8/ Aqil, 10 of 78 in U-10 / Ayesha, 52 of 62 in U-12.
My Assessment:
The whole idea for taking part in the U-8 event is to see how Faiz measures up against his peers.
(1) He can hold himself against "newer" players but will struggle against stronger.
Ivan Yap(1246), Wong (1266) & Nur Faiqah (1234) are all higher rated players.
(2) Needs to "slow down" moving the pieces.
Note: Get him to start writing games in Non-Rated event to slow down his movement.
(3) End Game NEEDS to be addressed.
(4) Not to bring Gadgets that will distract him.
Assessment on Competition:
(1) Venue was good. Also easy access to Prayer room.
(2) Food readily available even at venue.
(3) Most important, Junior players from other countries participating
e.g. Iran, India, Singapore as well as Australia & Philippines.
(4) It always irks me that time is not adhered to as advertised.
(5) Slight disappointment that advertised Lunch Break Lecture did not materialise.
(6) For RM30, note should have been made available.
(7) So called "Certificate" was just a piece of paper...leaves much to be desired!
Especially so when there were many overseas participants.
Competition: 3rd SWENSEN OPEN RAPID AGE GROUP CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP, 2012
Date: SUNDAY, 26 AUGUST 2012
Time: 8.30AM - 5.30PM, (Lunch Break & Chess Lecture: 12NOON - 1.30PM). 6 Rounds
Venue: CITITEL, MID-VALLEY KL
Organiser: ATCC / Arbiter: Abdul Hamid
Another NEW Tournament & Another NEW Venue for the cHEss pIRATE.
This must be AT LEAST the 6th NEW VENUE for 2012 after OCM-KL, PCA-Hartamas, PKS Cochrane-KL, Old Town-PJ & Shah Alam. Cititel is also our FIRST Hotel Venue. An interesting aspect of this tournament is the advertised "Lunch Break Chess Lecture". Should be interesting.
Let's see how the cHEss pIRATE measures up against his peers!!!
cHEss pIRATE FAIZ ended with a 50% record gathered from 3 wins.

Hari Raya Blitz ...and Ended with 2 Rapids
Recently, we i.e. hAnA, cHEss pIRATE & I started playing Blitz chess. Normally, we'll set the timer for 5minutes each.
Hence, in the morning after performing Raya prayers at Surau Mutiara Damansara in PJ and whilst waiting for their mum to prepare raya food for 2 families(Mine and my eldest sister Akmar)...we played a few rounds of blitz chess. This time the timer was set at either 4minutes or 3:30seconds. Had fun playing blitz and without realising it, my beloved wife had called out - " Dah Siap, Jemput Makan!"
It has always been a tradition since my late Mum was still alive that we'll have Sayur Lodeh(a concoction of mixed vegetables cooked whilst being simmered) and Ketupat with Kuah kacang....yes, Ketupat and not the cheap "knock-ons" called Nasi Himpit. Normally, the dishes will be ready by 2-3am in the morning...and without fail every year when everyone is asleep I would have the first taste of the dishes so to speak. Corny or weird as it may sound, I'd always considered the first taste of the dishes at 2-3am in the morning as a time where I reminisce about previous years while listening to the Takbir Raya. This year my wife might have wised up to my early morning food fetish especially when a few ketupats were unaccounted for and/or the lodeh levels had gone down....so she decided to prepare the stuffs the night before and only start cooking at 6AM.....aaaarggghhh! There goes my traditional early morning "tribute" to yesteryears.
...we finishEd having our meal and berhari raya with my family and my sister's family(who came from Penang) and by noon we were off to Kg.Mantun - KL to celebrate with my in-laws.
Before we knew it it was already 10PM and was Just finishing "dinner" at an Uncle's House in Bangsar...we decided then to go to an A-Level friends' (Azlina & Nizam aka Lin & Dag)house in TTDI where we met another A-levels friend i.e. Fazlur & family. We had known the couple & Fazlur since 1988...slightly below quarter of a century when doing our A-level programme in DU. What a relief as finally the cHEss pIRATE had a chess-sparring partner and he was still willing to play rapid even at 11PM. cHEss pIRATE managed to play 2 rapid games before we called it a day....just before 12midnight.

3rd SWENSEN OPEN RAPID AGE GROUP, registered!
I'd asked hAnA & the cHESs pIRATE the same question but at different times.
The question is as follows:-
" XXXX, Nak masuk chess competition tak...1 week after Raya? "
Answers:-
cHEss pIRATE - " NAK!!! "
hAnA - Shook her head and said , "...Tired la Ayah!".
Hence, for once the cHEss pIRATE is taking part in a chess competition without his sister taking part as well. He'll be taking part in the 3rd Swensen Rapid Age Group in the U-8 category scheduled to be held 1 week after Hari Raya Aidil Fitri I.e. Sunday,26th of August at the Cititel, Mid-Valley KL.
I guess, OP Peter was right when he made his comments on the kids prior to the 4th Merdeka Challenge.
Hopefully, it'll be a good competition to gauge how bad or, good the cHEss pIRATE really is as the U-8 Age Group competition is rarely organised. The last one that I can recall is the National Age Group competition organised by the MCF in March of this year.

1,000 pageVIEWS 4 AMfaCHESS blog
Just realised that there have been more than 1,000 pageVIEWS for this blog which were started in April of this year. As at time of writing, there were 1,007 views...GO Figure!
I'm a bit piqued as to why there would be visitors from out of Malaysia or, any visitors for that matter to this blog as it was started more as a Journal for my family's chess escapades and NO picture is uploaded. Readership appeal, would most probably be limited to between 5 and 10 family members.
Apart from MALAYSIAN visitors, visitors to this blog country of origin (where there are more than 1 visitor) are:-
(1) USA - 89
(2) UK - 78
(3) Russia - 65
(4) Germany - 9
(5) South Korea - 3
(6) Singapore - 2
PageVIEWS by BROWSERS:-
1. Safari - 579 (57%)
2. Firefox - 132 (13%)
3. Internet Explorer - 116 (11%)
4. Chrome - 103 (10%)
5. Mobile Safari - 60 (5%)
Top 5 PageVIEWS according to OPERATING SYSTEMS:-
1. iPad - 564 (58%)
2. Windows - 207 (21%)
3. Linux - 90 (9%)
4. Android - 56 (5%)
5. iPhone - 14 (1%)
COMMENTS / Inputs as to the future direction for this blog will be much appreciated.

INSOFAR SHAH ALAM Age Group, 2012
RESULTS UPDATE:
It seemed that the tournament is for 4 Rounds ONLY ( Having had a cursory look at the flyer handed out, I had assumed that it'll be for at least 5 or, 6 rounds). Thus, by 1.30pm the competition was over.
cHEss pIRATE @ AMIR FAIZ - 4th(out of 8), U-7 Mixed Category
Note: His 2nd 50% record after Polgar's May Day Challenge. However, he's yet to achieve it in a rated event,

hAnA and the cHEss pIRATE is at another NEW Venue and NEW Tournament. More importantly, this would be the FIRST TIME ever that both will be taking part in a competition in the blessed month of Ramadhan. cHEss pIRATE will be playing in the seldom held U-7 category whilst hAnA is in the U-12 category.
A "unique" point for me is that the competition only allows 16 players per age group. Also the organiser asked the player's age as at 1st January for grouping purposes. Hence, theoretically Faiz falls under the U-5 category while hAnA is in the U-10 group.

" Orang BERBUDI, Kita BERBAHASA. "
The Malays have a proverb which read as follows:
" ...(cont.from above),
ORANG MEMBERI, KITA MERASA."
Which means Good deeds, must be reciprocated with good deeds.
...the very least that we can do for the SKTTDI and MSSM-KL Chess Teachers who'd helped hAnA in her chess journey is to have an Appreciation Dinner.
Had intended for the dinner to be done earlier but work commitments, NGO matters, Alumni 60th Anniversary celebrations and a car accident put paid to those early hopes.
Hence, am quite relieved that we finally managed to host an Appreciation Dinner at Muhibbah Restaurant in Sg.Penchala, KL before the start of the fasting month and just before my taking part in the RSOG-ACD training programme which starts on Monday.
Once again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH and SYUKRAN to all Chess Teachers from SKTTDI(1) and the MSSM KL Chess Team Teachers who made the journey possible for hAnA.

Discussing Matters Related to Chess in School
Today, after school hours I went to see hAnA's Class Teacher(Cikgu Nur Halim) & the School's Principal(Pn.Hajjah Nik Nab) as well.
I was concerned that hAnA's continued absence from class and school due to Chess(around 2-3weeks) and Choral Speaking(1-2 weeks) is starting to take it's toll on her academic performance. Never before had I seen in hAnA's class standing a position any lower than 3rd but, I saw it this year when I collected her report card last week.
Hence, I requested that an official letter be inserted into hAnA's records stating that from January-June of this year she had missed classes due to her representing the school in Choral Speaking.......and of course, hAnA representing the SKTTDI School (@ SK Seri Hartamas), Bangsar Zone (@ SK Desa Tun Hussein Onn) and Federal Territory (@ Kuala Terengganu for MSSM Chess) Team for Chess.
The school Management were very supportive of my request and promised to do so within a week. Puan Hajjah Nik Nab was very supportive and gave hAnA some words of encouragement to work harder at her chess game so that hopefully she can even represent Malaysia in the future.
My sincere thanks to the Principal of SKTTDI(1) - Pn.Hajjah Nik Nab, her Senior assistant - Puan Kamariah and Cikgu Nur Halim for the support given. Not forgetting, Ustaz Rosdi and Puan Norliana for handling the SK.TTDI(1) Chess Team.SYUKRAN, SYUKRAN.
