5th PJ Open - Could Have Been Runners-Up but Decided to Throw Caution to the Wind!

5th PJ Open, U12 Results.

This event was rescheduled to a later date due to a date clash with an earlier event. Not many top players participated in this event most probably due to the NAG just being concluded last week and most players...and parents decided to take a well-earned rest this week. Would have loved to take a break as well but had committed to SM earlier that Faiz will participate in his third PJ Open and add some "title" to the competition. The organisers did mention about him being a young player with a title (....adik ni, muda muda lagi dah ada title) during the prize-giving ceremony which was met with applause by the audience. .

CP was Top Seed for the event but finished 4th after a loss and a draw in the last 2 rounds of the 7-round competition. In the last round, CP made a decision to go for the title despite the opponent offering a draw (which would have enabled him to emerge Runners-Up) but the results was not in his favour. Well, you Win Some & Lose Some and I'm rather pleased that he went for broke rather than settle for a draw. I am certain that this trait will serve him well in future competitions.

NAG 2015 - A Surprised 9th, An OK Result & A Nothing but Useless 3rd!

For the first time ever all 3 siblings went on stage for a National-level prize-giving ceremony. However, all 3 went up with vastly differing set of emotions.

Eldest who had not been playing for 2 years, emerged 9th in her category.

hAnA, not playing for 6 months finished as per her starting rank of 10th.

RESULTS:-
U8 Boys
U14 Girls

ON TIME despite being Late!

After a few rounds of the kids giving their opponents a more than 10minutes advantage, was on time today despite being late.

Reason being, the 7th Round started 11 minutes late, Ahaks!

4 Ringgit and A Loss!

...ala the movie "4 Weddings and a Funeral",.......for CP its "4 Ringgit and a Loss ".

4 Ringgit received by CP was courtesy of Cikgu Suhairi i.e. KL's PT for chess. Apparently, hemwas giving incentives to KL chess players. While I'm not sure why RM4 was given, it is most probably due to CP having earned 4 points when he was giving the incentives.

Well, what can I say about the loss in Round 6. The mistake was most probably made before the 1st move was made.

NAG 2015 Begins Today.....and The Organisers Deserves a Yellow Card

The NAG 2015 begins today at the Olympic Sports Hotel,KL and in my opinion the organisers deserves to be flashed a Yellow Card.

This is the kids' 4th participation in NAG and thus the fourth time I'm sending them for the competition. As such, I write with a certain degree of experience and also expect a certain level of standards.

 (1st SKBJ Juniors Banner)

Its the 1st Day of the 1st SKBJ Juniors which despite it being held for the first time is refreshingly well-organised with games starting on time. There's also ample parking, with a pretty decent and well-stocked canteen. Players came from allover the country. Apart from Selangor and KL, there were also players from Pulau Pinang, Melaka, Kelantan and F.T.Putrajaya to name a few.

Against this backdrop, The cHEss pIRATE @ Amir Faiz managed to equal his previous 17-games unbeaten record set in 2013 during the months of June to August.
Previous 2013 Record Report HERE

On the 1st Day of the 1st SKBJ Juniors in Bukit Jelutong, CP managed to equal his previous 17 Games Winning Record set in 2013. If the 2013 record was set over 4 competitions, this time he managed to equaled it in just 3 competitions. Details as follows:-

1st Zone Title & 8th Overall Title for CM Amir Faiz Amirul. CHAMPION, MSSWPKL Bangsar Zone U10

( Bangsar Zone - MSSWPKL, U10 Boys Individual. FINAL STANDINGS)

( Prize - Giving or rather Certificate Presentation Ceremony )

CM Amir Faiz Amirul got a belated birthday gift 3 days after his 3rd March birthday when he emerged Champion of the MSSWPKL Bangsar Zone Boys U10 Individual final. This is his 8th title overall, his first for the year and also his first as a CM. He secured his first Bangsar Zone title by winning all 7 rounds in the 3-day competition held at S.K. Jalan Hang Tuah, Kuala Lumpur.

It was a close call and nerve-wrecking final round as the bus arrived late i.e.around 8.50AM resulting in players being time handicapped as the Final Round started at 8.15AM. All players are given 45 minutes each and as such SKTTDI(1) players had only around 10 minutes to play their games.

Once again, Thank You Very Much to ALL teachers involved - Cikgu Siti Nasibah, Cikgu Afiq, Ust.Rosdi, PK Ko-Kurikular Cikgu Zita and Guru Besar Pn.Juriah Jupri. Congratulations to the SKTTDI(1) Boys U10 trio of Amir Faiz Amirul(Std.2), Muhammad Al Waqeef(Std.4) and Ahmad Hadif (Std.2) for being able to represent the Bangsar Zone at the State Finals in April.

Special thanks goes to CP's coach FT Peter Long for the guidance and patience to train CP and also to Polgar Chess Asia for the sponsorship extended for the 2nd year.

Play commenced at 8.15AM. Thus far, after 6 rounds of play, CP is on 6 points/6 (100%). Hopefully, he maintains this level for tomorrow, the next 3 days as well as building a momentum towards NAG2015 and April's MSSKL State Finals.

TODAY's RESULTS: Thursday, 5th March.
R4(0815-0945): W v. Isaac. WON
R5(1000-1130): W v. Haziman. WON
R6(1145-1315): B v. Lee Yen Heang. WON.

1st SKBJ Juniors 2015 - Players List & Starting Rank

The organisers are all set and ready when they released the Players' List for both U12 and U9 event in an email I'd received yesterday. Many applications had to be rejected and even those who had been accepted earlier had to be declined as a limit on the number of players from each school was set at 8.

Refer List HERE
The starting rank is also published in Chess-Results. U9 HERE & U12 HERE
There will be 161 and 58 players for the U12 and U9 categories respectively, 19 more players than the 200 places only advertised earlier.

CP is ranked 2nd in the U9 category and more importantly for me I don't have to send CP to the competition as ths school teacher will be escorting. He will however miss the Circuit 1 Fencing competition at MSN.

CLASH of DATES: CHESS v. ATHLETICS v. FENCING

With the chess season in full swing leading up to March's NAG2015 and MSSKL Bangsar zone/KL state finals in early March and April respectively, CP had to make certain sacrifices.

First of the sacrifice made is in Athletics. Being the standard 1 sprint champion last year, he should have been going for athletics training/competition in KL together with the rest of the school team. However, the opportunity had to be discarded and what pains him most is the fact that the school chess and athletics team travels on the same bus every morning to head for their respective destinations. To compensate for this loss I told him that should he qualify again next year for the athletics team and if the schedule clashes, I will leave the decision as to which event to go to in his hands. A finger shake was made and matters were laid to rest until 2016 at least.

The second sacrifice made is in Fencing. This weekend there's the "Kejohanan Lawan Pedang Kadet & Remaja Kebangsaan 2015 (Sirkit 1)" at Gym 3-MSN. Well, Go Figure!
Told him after the chess season is 'over' in June, he can concentrate on Fencing alone if he so wishes and the target competition that he can enter will be in August or September. Just nice for August's Kejohanan Lawan Pedang (Sirkit 2) or a suitable comparative competition around the 3rd Quarter.

Most probably Badminton would have to be sacrificed as well.
All this for the sake of  'inactive' chess!!!??? Considering the sacrifices made, I hope its worth it for CP to be active in chess this year from March till June.

2015 Bangsar Zone Individual Event, Begins Today w CP 3/3.

The Individual event for the MSSKL Bangsar zone begins today at S.K.Jalan Hang Tuah 1-K.L.
Last year, the U12 and U9 categories were on offer. This year, though the U12 is still on offer the U9 category have been "upgraded" to the U10 event. Essentially, this means that the same pool of players who had been playing in the U9 event last year will still be playing in the U10 competition this year. Why the categories keep on changing is beyond me. Previously, MSSKL even had the U8, U10 & U12 categories which for me is the best set-up to groom new and younger players.

Though asked to play in a different category, CP will be playing in the U10 event as the school had registered him as per guidelines received. Others in the U10 category from S.K.TTDI (1) are brothers Al Waqeef and Hadif as well as cousins Adib and Ashraf from SKBD.

RESULTS:
Wednesday, 4th March.
R1(1000-1130): B v. Adhaven. WON.
R2(1145-1315): W v. Shatiswaran. WON.

2014 Report HERE

In 2014, CP won 4 out of 5 games i.e 80% on Board 1. Fast Forward to 2015 and CP won all 5 games BUT on Board 4.

In my opinion, he did better last year on Board 1 despite losing 1 game compared to his  holiday on Board 4 this year.

S.K.Taman Tun Dr.Ismail(1) - THIRD, U12 Boys Team Event - MSSKL Bangsar Zone 2015

( Official Final Results - Team Standing, Boys U12 Bangsar Zone)

CM Amir Faiz celebrated his 8th Birthday today by helping his school team to qualify for the State Finals of the Boys U12 team event in the MSSKL chess competition.
Stellar performances by the hard-working Al Waqeef on Board 1 and the 'bored actor' CM Amir Faiz who for whatever reason plied his trade on Board 4 ended with both boys recording a 100% record i.e. 5 wins in 5 rounds and thus ensured the S.K.TTDI (1) team finished third after tie-break.
The third place is even more significant considering the fact that last year the team was not even placed in the top 4 of the Bangsar zone team event. In 2014, they finished 11th.
Congatulations to the team of Muhammad Al Waqeef, Tengku Hakeem, Ranesh R. and Amir Faiz.

The MSSKL Bangsar Zone chess competition for Primary schools begins today and finally CP plays his first game in 2015 after a 2 1/2 months break. Today will also be his last game as a 7-year old kid as tomorrow will be his 8th birthday (officially though he turns 8 when the Zuhur prayers' call or Azan is heard tomorrow).

 ( CP's 1st Game Notes for 2015, Round 1 v. Kisshor of SJKT Vivekananda )
The past couple of years the competition was held at S.K.Sri Hartamas K.L.enabling a regular visit to check up on CP due to its proximity to my media and legal offices. However, this year the event is held at S.K.Jalan Hang Tuah 1 which I believe is around the VI area.

The players have to arrive at school latest by 7.10AM so that they can proceed with the school bus to the venue together with the Athletics Team who will compete at a different venue.

All the Very Best to the S.K.TTDI (1) Boys team of Amir Faiz, Hakeem, Raneesh and Al Waqeef as well as the girls team. Hope the Boys team make it to the State Finals in April.
